I met Harald Harb in Aspen in 1997.
Within minutes, I realised I had found a ski coach unlike any other.
Harb's insight into ski equipment and how it affected skiing performance astounded me.
I went through the alignment process in amazement.
I couldn't believe this knowledge existed and was available.
I was then blown away even further when I went skiing with my new alignment and was able to focus on the key movements that truly bring skiing success.
I decided then and there, I would return to ski instructing to deliver, the same opportunity, I had just received.
Many of our clients today, are amazed by what we do, and ask us how it all came about.
So this month, I thought I would share with you a little of the Harald Harb story and where we at Harb Ski Camps Australasia fit in.
After retiring from the National Ski Team in his early 20's, Harb followed a simple formula.
To give his athletes the greatest chance of success and empower them with knowledge so they continue to make good decisions throughout out their skiing careers.
This 'simple' formula kept Harb very busy for the next 22 years.
As a race coach Harb realised there was more to skiing fast than good movements and strong muscles.
So Harb immersed himself in selecting and tailoring his athletes' ski equipment to suit their individual needs.
To find out which set up worked best, Harb would test combinations of boots, bindings, skis, footbeds, shimming and boot grinding.
Harb then developed his athletes further through a teaching system that continually improves balance and focuses on movement efficiency. "The best ski racers and skiers manage their balance the best," said Harb to me while watching a World Cup Slalom event a few years back.
While running a successful US Junior National Development Team, Harb's career took a different path in 1995 when some local instructors convinced Harb to try out for the US Demonstration Team. Harb made the team, which placed him in the spotlight as one of the best ski instructors in the US.
Up until that day, Harb had seen himself as a race coach.
Next, came lucrative job offers, and Harb relocated to Colorado from Alaska to train ski instructors in Winter Park and throughout the US. It was while travelling across the US holding clinics as a Demo Team member and trainer, Harb realized that there was an opportunity in the ski instruction industry.
Harb discovered that there was very little understanding of the role alignment played in ski improvement. As a result, Harb began sharing his knowledge to every skier, coach and instructor who would listen.
He began writing for Snow Country magazine and then became US Skiing magazine's technical editor on skiing.
To reach a larger audience in more detail, Harb produced a book and video called Anyone can be an Expert Skier - The New Way to Ski.
The book explains alignment and Harb's efficient method of skiing. With the addition of a second book and video focusing on powder, bumps and carving, in a short space of time, Harb became a best-selling author.
And the alignment message began to snowball.
Harb then received e-mails and letters from skiers wishing to improve their skiing using his system of ski teaching and alignment.
So Harb created Harb Ski Systems.
A business dedicated to delivering ski improvement products and services.
